TUSTIN, Calif.—Sweetgreen’s Grand Opening Draws Crowds
Dozens of customers flocked to the newly opened Sweetgreen restaurant during the chain’s grand opening on August 22. To celebrate its new location, the chain offered free flower bouquets to all visitors, regardless of purchase. The event also featured live music and free samples.
In addition to the festivities, Sweetgreen made a generous donation to Food Finders, a local nonprofit dedicated to reducing hunger in Southern California. For every meal sold on opening day, the restaurant company pledged to donate a meal to those in need.

The opening day festivities lasted from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., during which time the chain also hosted free giveaways including coffee, custom cookies, and beaded bracelets. Attendees also had the chance to win artwork created by Southern California-based painter and ceramicist Danielle Hutchens, who depicted abstracts of locally grown ingredients.
Customer Anna Ferguson expressed her excitement about the new location, saying, “This place is very modern but with more of a California feel. I was always impressed with Sweetgreen’s salads; they’re such a popular thing in L.A.”
Ms. Ferguson, who ordered a barbecue chicken salad, reminisced about her first experience with Sweetgreen 15 years ago at their Washington D.C. location near Georgetown University. She noted the positive changes in the chain’s appearance and competitive price point.
Sweetgreen is renowned for its healthy grab-and-go salad bowls, priced in the $13 to $14 range. Options include the elote corn salad with organic sweet corn, arugula, toasted sunflowers, and cherry tomatoes, topped with a refreshing lemon vinaigrette. Warm salad bowls featuring sweet potato, garbanzo beans, and blackened chicken are also available.
The restaurant prides itself on sourcing organic ingredients from local farmers whenever possible. A handwritten sign inside the restaurant lists the seasonal produce used in their dishes, emphasizing their commitment to a farm-to-table model.
Customer Andrew Fitzgerald, who eagerly awaited his turn in line, exclaimed, “This place is so legit! I’ve been waiting for one to open nearby so I could come during my lunch break. I’m stoked!”
Mr. Fitzgerald, a resident of Santa Ana, first tried Sweetgreen at one of their Los Angeles-based locations and instantly became a fan. He praised the “crisp” salad toppings, including toasted rice, salty sunflower seeds, and a wide variety of dressings. He also appreciated that Sweetgreen’s salads satisfied his cravings without sabotaging his fitness goals.
Sweetgreen was founded in 2006 by Georgetown University students Nicolas Jammet, Nathaniel Ru, and Jonathan Neman. The trio came up with the idea after growing tired of the campus’s unhealthy and “boring” meals. Since then, the start-up has flourished, offering nutritious and delicious options to salad lovers everywhere.
