Swiss Google workers stage walkout as job cuts hit Europe

Martin Coulter

(Reuters) Hundreds marched out Wednesday at Google’s Zurich office, Switzerland after more 200 employees were laid off.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, announced plans to reduce 12,000 jobs worldwide in January. This is equivalent to 6%.

This decision was taken amid a wave in job cuts in corporate America, particularly in the tech sector, which has seen more than 290,000. Workers have been fired since the beginning of this year according to Layoffs.fyi.

Google’s Zurich Office, which is home to roughly 5,000 employees, held a walkout last month in protest of the imminent layoffs.

A representative of the IT workers’ union Syndicom said that over 2,000 employees offered to lower their wages and work more hours to stop job cuts. This proposal was rejected by Google.

“Our members at Google Zurich and all employees joining the walkout are showing solidarity with those laid off,” A spokesperson from Syndicom stated the following:

“They are bothered by the non-transparent nature of the layoffs, and are especially disappointed that Google is laying off workers at a time when the company is making billions in profit every year.”

Google spokesperson claimed that Google had reduced the number and alignment of its top priorities to maintain the roles.

“The consultation process has now concluded in Switzerland and employees whose roles were impacted have been notified,”.
