Taiwan VP stands firm against China’s threats over U.S. visit.
Taiwan’s Vice President, William Lai, has declared that Taiwan will not yield to China’s threats and military exercises. During a brief visit to New York City, Lai emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to freedom and democracy while pushing back against China’s constant aggression. Despite facing heavy criticism from Beijing, Lai remains resolute in his stance.
Lai made these remarks during a speech at a lunch banquet, stating, “When Taiwan is safe, the world is safe, and when there is peace on the Taiwan Strait, there will be world peace. No matter how great the threat of authoritarianism is to Taiwan, we absolutely will not be scared nor cower, we will uphold the values of democracy and freedom.”
China has previously expressed its opposition to Lai’s visits, with the Chinese ambassador to the U.S. stating that preventing Lai from visiting America was a “priority” for the communist country. Lai’s stopover in New York was part of his journey to Paraguay for the inauguration of its new president. Paraguay is one of the few countries that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry labeled Lai as a “separatist” and a “troublemaker” upon his arrival in New York. They also warned of taking “resolute and vigorous measures” to defend China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
China has a history of following through on such threats, as seen in their extensive military drills following visits by prominent figures like Nancy Pelosi and President Tsai Ing-wen. Experts believe that China is likely to conduct military drills once again following Lai’s return.
Lai, who is currently a frontrunner in Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election, has been associated with the “deep green” faction of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which leans towards supporting independence. However, since winning his party’s nomination, Lai has taken a more moderate stance, vowing to maintain the status quo and allowing the Taiwanese people to decide their fate.
