Take It From A Teacher: There’s Only One Fix To Massive Learning Loss

By now, it’s well-known that the school shutdowns during the Covid pandemic have resulted in noticeable learning loss. According to most recent data The National Assessment of Educational Progress (a.k.a. “the Nation’s Report Card”According to the report, reading and math skills across the country are at their lowest levels in decades. Evidently, remote learning, where kids attend classes through Zoom and submit their work online, wasn’t Remotely effective.

It is easy to dismiss such news, as Americans have a low opinion of public education. They assume the worst. But, the Hoover Institution recently provided a way for people to understand this loss: dollars and cents.

In “The Economic Consequence of the Pandemic: State by State,” According to the Hoover Institute, American students who miss more than a year of in-person instruction will suffer a significant financial loss. The report states that the following: “Students on average face 2-9 percent lower lifetime incomes depending on the state in which they live,” And “states themselves are estimated to face a GDP that is 0.6 to 2.9 percent lower each year for the remainder of the 21st Century.” Their incomes and state economies will decline as fewer high-skilled jobs are available to them.
