ABC News’s The View co-host Sara Haines asked the Illinois senator about Hegseth’s previous comments about women serving in combat and how it could lead to lowering standards in combat.

“As recently as November, Hegseth said women shouldn’t be in combat, but he has seemingly changed his view after being nominated, saying he supports women serving in combat roles so long as they meet the same standards as men,” Haines asked Duckworth on Wednesday, adding, “Have the standards for women ever been different or lower? I know the answer to this but I want you to answer it, and what do you make of this change of heart?”

“Yeah, the standards have not been lowered so that women can serve in combat and the women who especially pass into the special forces realm,” Duckworth responded.

“What he’s trying to do is obfuscate and confuse the American people. The only standards lowered are ones for the secretary of defense so he can take this job,” she continued.

During a Tuesday confirmation hearing, Duckworth and Hegseth sparred about numerous matters, including his views on women in combat.

“Let me just say that the American people need a secretary of defense who’s ready to lead on Day One. You are not that person,” she said.

Duckworth pressed the nominee about whether he had ever led an audit for any organization he ran and then attempted to quiz him about the number of nations in ASEAN, a regional intergovernmental organization that primarily promotes economic growth and peace.
