Tax Deadlines Moved to October for Most Californians Due to Storms

LOS ANGELES—California is extending the state tax filing and payment due dates to Oct. 16 for Californians impacted by this winter’s storms, aligning with the IRS, which previously extended the federal tax filing deadline to Oct. 16 for the same reason.

“As communities across the state continue recovering from the damage caused by the winter storms, California is working swiftly to help recovering Californians get back on their feet,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. “The state is aligning with the Biden Administration and extending the tax filing deadline in addition to the tax relief announced earlier this year.”

Newsom announced last month that California residents impacted by winter storms may be eligible for a deduction for their disaster losses. He also extended the filing and payment deadlines for Californians to May 15.

Tax relief is available to almost all of the state’s 58 county, including San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino. The relief does not apply in the southeastern portion of the state, where is Imperial County.

The deadlines are Jan. 8-2023 or before Oct. 16-2023. This includes 2022 individual income tax returns due April 18 and quarterly estimated taxes payments due January 17 and April 18 2023.

California announced that the extension was extended on March 2. In January, the IRS announced their extension.
