LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Taylor Swift’s concert film has taken the world by storm, raking in a staggering $123.5 million in ticket sales over the weekend, according to AMC Theatres (AMC.N), the film’s distributor.
AMC had initially projected that “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” would reach a total of $126 million to $130 million in sales for shows held from Thursday through Sunday.
Out of the global total, approximately $92.8 million came from the United States and Canada, falling slightly short of the $95 million-plus prediction made on Sunday.
“The Eras Tour” now holds the title for the highest-grossing concert film in history, surpassing Justin Bieber’s 2011 film “Never Say Never,” which collected $99 million worldwide over its entire run.
The success of Swift’s movie has provided a much-needed boost to cinemas, which have been struggling with a lackluster autumn lineup due to delays caused by a Hollywood actors’ strike, including the highly anticipated “Dune: Part Two.”
