A Wyoming Teacher Faces Charges After Tragic Suicide of 11-Year-Old Student
A Wyoming teacher has been charged after an 11-year-old student tragically took his own life while under her supervision.
Amelia Giordano, a music teacher at Carpenter Elementary, is now facing a child endangerment charge in connection with the death of fifth-grader Paul Pine.
Giordano pleaded not guilty to the charge, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
According to a report from the Tribune Eagle, Pine struggled in school due to reading difficulties, which often made him a target for bullying.
In October of last year, Pine’s mother, Chandel, discovered that he had a plan to end his own life, specifically in the school bathroom. Chandel immediately sought help for her son, including hospitalization and mental health support.
Working with school administrators, Chandel implemented a plan to protect Pine, which included a rule that fifth-grade students were not allowed to go to the bathroom alone.
However, in December, a concerned teacher discovered that Pine had brought a knife to school and was experiencing disturbing thoughts.
Should Giordano be held liable for Pine’s death?
The school initially moved to expel Pine following the knife incident, but after Chandel’s intervention, the district’s board of trustees allowed him to return on a probationary basis.
Tragically, shortly after his return, Pine’s life was cut short.
While in Giordano’s music class, Pine was allowed to go to the bathroom alone. Video footage revealed that 17 minutes passed before anyone checked on him.
During that time, Pine took his own life in the bathroom.
The video reportedly shows Giordano and another teacher approaching the bathroom but failing to take further action.
Eventually, the school principal entered the bathroom and discovered Pine. CPR was performed until a helicopter arrived to transport Pine to the hospital, but despite medical intervention, he passed away on January 12.
Chandel described her son as a bright and athletic child who brought joy to those around him. The Pine family plans to file a civil suit against the school district for failing to uphold the protection plan that was in place.
This tragic incident sheds light on a larger issue: the failure of the public school system to adequately protect our children from harm. Instances of violence and abuse in schools are not isolated incidents, and it is crucial that we address this problem to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
