Marc Benioff: San Francisco Downtown ⁢Will Never Be ⁤the‌ Same

‌

Marc Benioff, CEO ⁢of San⁢ Francisco-based software company Salesforce, boldly declares that the city’s downtown⁤ is ⁤”never⁤ going‍ back ‌to the⁢ way it was” before the pandemic. According to him,‍ workers⁢ will no⁢ longer⁤ commute‍ every day.

The city⁣ needs to “rebalance‍ downtown,” ‍Benioff said, ‍according to‍ the Associated ‌Press. ‌He recommends converting office‍ space into⁢ housing⁤ and‍ increasing the number of police⁢ officers.

Rampant crime and rising homelessness have⁢ driven ⁤people ‌and businesses out⁢ of ⁤California cities, with⁣ some even leaving the Golden⁤ State ‍entirely. San⁤ Francisco’s downtown has‍ lost‍ half ‌of‌ its businesses since⁣ the start of the pandemic. ⁤Major⁣ retailers ‌like Old⁤ Navy, Nordstrom, ⁤Saks OFF 5th, and ‍Whole Foods have ⁤closed‍ their downtown locations due to safety ⁤concerns.

Over half a million residents have fled California ⁤in‍ the two years following‍ the pandemic’s onset, ⁤as⁣ reported by⁢ the New⁢ York‍ Post.

“They just‌ don’t want ⁢to ⁢deal⁤ with‍ the homelessness, ⁢with the environment, with the‍ ambiance,”⁣ Shuja ⁤said.
