Teen dies after collapsing at track meet.
Remembering a Texas Teenager: Tragic Loss After Cross-Country Meet
A Texas teenager who tragically collapsed and died after a cross-country meet two weeks ago is being fondly remembered by those who knew him. Angel Hernandez, a sophomore track star from Chisholm Trail High School in Fort Worth, had just achieved his personal best 5K time on October 13. However, as he crossed the finish line at the University Interscholastic League District 6A competition in Haltom City, he collapsed and never got up again.
According to reports, Angel managed to get to his feet with the help of his friends and made his way to a nearby water station. Unfortunately, he collapsed once more and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. The cause of his death is currently under investigation by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Angel was laid to rest on Friday, and his school district’s superintendent posthumously presented him with a varsity letter jacket. His retired track coach, Brent Brevard, described him as a model student-athlete who worked hard, cared about his teammates, and excelled academically.
The Ranger Record, the school’s newspaper, reported that Angel’s teammates considered him to be like family. One of his friends, Alejandro Bailey, described the heartbreaking moment when Angel collapsed after crossing the finish line. The teammates stayed together, offering support and hoping for his recovery. Chisholm Trail High School cross country coach Randall Durant praised Angel’s growth from competing at the JV level as a freshman to becoming one of the best on the varsity team.
Angel’s passion for life was as strong as his love for sports, according to his friend Madison Meers. She described him as someone who loved everyone he met and brought joy to their lives. A GoFundMe campaign was set up to assist Angel’s family with his final expenses, and it raised over double its goal.
