Temecula man convicted of murder in fentanyl death.
California Man Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Fentanyl-Related Death
For the first time ever, a California jury has delivered a groundbreaking verdict, finding a 34-year-old man guilty of second-degree murder. The defendant, Vincente David Romero, knowingly provided fentanyl to a woman named Kelsey King, resulting in her tragic death. This landmark ruling marks a significant step in the state’s battle against the opioid crisis.
“This verdict is a testament to our unwavering commitment to protecting our communities, providing justice for victims, and holding those accountable who engage in the distribution of illicit fentanyl resulting in death,” Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a news release.
Riverside County, located in Southern California, has become the first jurisdiction in the state to secure a guilty verdict in a fentanyl-related homicide trial. This victory sets a precedent and sends a powerful message to drug dealers that they can be held accountable for murder.

The state of California has been grappling with a surge in fentanyl-related deaths. In 2021 alone, there were 5,961 deaths attributed to fentanyl, accounting for 83 percent of all opioid-related deaths in the state.
In another case in Placer County, Northern California, a defendant pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of a 15-year-old who died after purchasing fentanyl from the defendant. This further highlights the severity of the crisis and the need for justice.
Matt Capelouto, a resident of Temecula, expressed his satisfaction with the jury’s decision. His own daughter fell victim to fentanyl poisoning in 2019. Since then, he has been advocating for justice and raising awareness about the devastating impact of illicit drugs.
“Justice doesn’t bring our kids back, but our kids are worth fighting for, and they deserve it,” Mr. Capelouto said. “The families deserve it, too.”
Mr. Capelouto now serves as the president of Drug Induced Homicide, an organization dedicated to raising national awareness about the effectiveness of criminal investigation and prosecution in reducing illicit drug deaths.
Although California legislation called “Alexandra’s Law” was proposed this year to impose harsher penalties on fentanyl dealers, it unfortunately failed to pass. However, the recent conviction of Vincente David Romero demonstrates that justice can still be served.
During the trial, prosecutors presented compelling evidence that the defendant was aware of the deadly nature of fentanyl and knowingly provided it to the victim. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is significantly more potent than heroin and morphine, making it a highly dangerous substance.
This groundbreaking verdict serves as a powerful reminder that those who engage in the distribution of illicit fentanyl resulting in death will be held accountable for their actions.
