Vietnam War hero from Tennessee to receive Medal of Honor.
Award-Winning Helicopter Rescue in Vietnam War
Prepare for an inspiring story of bravery and heroism! Retired Captain Larry Taylor, a Tennessean from Signal Mountain, Tennessee, will be awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor by President Joe Biden. This incredible recognition comes more than 50 years after Taylor’s daring actions during the Vietnam War.
Taylor’s remarkable rescue took place on June 18, 1968, in the hamlet of Ap Go Cong, Vietnam. As the leader of a helicopter light-fire support team, Taylor fearlessly led a mission to save four soldiers who were trapped by communist forces during a reconnaissance operation.

Taylor’s heroic actions did not stop there. Despite running low on fuel and ammunition, he made the bold decision to extract the team using his two-man Cobra helicopter. This daring feat had never been attempted before. With complete disregard for his own safety, Taylor landed his Cobra under heavy enemy fire. The patrol team clung to rocket-pods and skids as Taylor carried them to safety before landing them back on the ground.

Last year, on the anniversary of the rescue, one of the soldiers Taylor saved expressed his gratitude. Dave Hill, a member of the patrol, acknowledged the immense risk they faced and thanked Taylor for his selfless actions.
In addition to the Medal of Honor, Taylor has received numerous other accolades for his service, including the Silver Star, a Bronze Star, 43 Air Medals, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After his military career, Taylor pursued a successful venture in the roofing and sheet metal industry.
