GOP lawmakers target Mayorkas after illegal immigrant accused of child rape: Tennesseans deserve answers.
Tennessee Republicans Demand Explanation from Department of Homeland Security
A group of Tennessee Republican lawmakers has taken a stand against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), demanding answers regarding an illegal immigrant who has been accused of raping multiple children and was allowed to stay in the U.S. for two decades.
Leading the charge is Senator Marsha Blackburn, who, along with other Republican representatives, wrote a scathing letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing his agency of failing to enforce American immigration laws and contributing to these alleged crimes.
“We write to express our disgust with this administration’s complete failure to secure our border and enforce the rule of law, the effects of which are impacting communities and families across the country,” the letter states.
The letter specifically references the case of Camilo Hurtado Campos, an illegal immigrant and youth soccer coach residing in Franklin, Tennessee. According to The Tennessean, disturbing videos and pictures depicting the rapes of at least 10 children between the ages of 9 and 17 were found on Campos’ phone, which he accidentally left at a restaurant.
Franklin Police Department Lt. Charles Warner expressed concern that there may be even more victims, stating, “We fear that, in addition to very recent victims, there could be a decade or more of victims out there.” Campos is currently in custody, facing charges of child rape and sexual exploitation of a minor.
“Perhaps most devastating of all, this horrific abuse was entirely preventable — police confirmed on July 12 that Campos is an illegal immigrant who should not have been in our country in the first place,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter on Monday. “Indeed, if this administration had any interest in enforcing our nation’s laws, he wouldn’t have been.”
The letter also highlights Campos’ previous encounters with law enforcement, including citations for public intoxication and driving without a license. Despite these incidents, Campos managed to live in the Franklin area for approximately two decades under multiple administrations.
The Republican lawmakers have requested further information from the DHS regarding Campos’ case, including whether the department was aware of his immigration status and if any enforcement actions were ever initiated against him. They expect a response from Secretary Mayorkas by July 24.
“Violence against children is one of the most heinous crimes imaginable, and Tennesseans deserve to know why the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) permitted this criminal to live in their community and abuse their children after entering the country illegally,” the letter emphasizes.
Secretary Mayorkas has faced intense criticism from Republicans for his handling of the U.S. southern border crisis, with some even calling for his impeachment. The situation reached its peak in May, with approximately 10,000 apprehensions per day.
