Terry McAuliffe Ripped For Tweet Saying It Should Be Easier To Vote Than Buy A Gun

Virginia Democratic nominee for governor Terry McAuliffe said on Tuesday that it should be easier to vote than buy a gun.

“Call me crazy, but I think it should be easier to vote than it should be to buy a gun,” he said in a tweet.

McAuliffe is seeking his second term as Virginia governor after serving from 2014-2018, as state law prevents governors from serving consecutive terms. He won the Democratic primary in June with over 60% of the vote.

McAuliffe is a gun control advocate whose platform calls for a “ban” on “the sale of assault weapons,” and getting “high-capacity magazines, and ‘ghost guns’ off our streets.”

The tweet was slammed by users, with many pointing to the prevalence of mail-in ballots and strictness of gun control measures as evidence that voting is easier than obtaining firearms.

McAuliffe’s Republican opponent in the November election is Glenn Youngkin, the former CEO of the private equity giant Carlyle Group.

In a statement to the Daily Caller, Youngkin campaign press secretary Macaulay Porter said, “Terry McAuliffe’s corrupt parole board released violent criminals and killers, making it easier for felons to get guns. Does Terry think his criminal first, victim last approach will go unnoticed? Does Terry think voters will forget his weak record on crime?”(RELATED: Politifact Virginia Retracts Face Check Against Deceptive Terry McAuliffe Ad, Reposts The Same Conclusion A Day Later)

“As governor, Glenn Youngkin will prioritize public safety, support law enforcement, work hard to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, and ensure all Virginians have faith in their elections and that every legal vote is counted quickly and accurately,” Porter added.
