Tesla is issuing a recall for more than two million vehicles due to concerns about the safety of its “Autosteer” function.
The company made this announcement following an investigation that revealed the autopilot safety system was not sufficient to prevent driver misuse.
The recall affects various Tesla models, including the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, all manufactured between 2012 and 2023, and equipped with the “Autosteer” function.
“In certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, the prominence and scope of the feature’s controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse,” stated the recall notice.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the autopilot system can give drivers a false sense of safety and may be misused in dangerous situations where Tesla’s technology cannot safely navigate the road.
A new software update aims to provide drivers with more warnings when they are not paying attention while using the “Autosteer” function, ultimately enhancing road safety, as per the NHTSA.
The NHTSA conducted a review of nearly 1,000 crashes involving the autopilot system since 2021, including frontal impacts and impacts resulting from inadvertent disengagement of the system.
Tesla representatives have met with the agency multiple times during the investigation.
The investigation found that in certain circumstances with “Autosteer,” the driver may not maintain responsibility for vehicle operation, be unprepared to intervene when necessary, or fail to recognize when Autosteer is canceled or not engaged, increasing the risk of a crash.
Tesla has expressed disagreement with the agency’s report, but on December 5th, they voluntarily agreed to recall and provide a free software update to affected vehicles.
The update will incorporate additional controls and alerts to further encourage drivers to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged, according to the safety report.
Meanwhile, an NHTSA spokesperson stated on Wednesday that the investigation remains open as they monitor the effectiveness of Tesla’s remedies and continue working with the automaker to ensure the highest level of safety.
“Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety, but only when deployed responsibly. Today’s action is an example of improving automated systems by prioritizing safety,” added the spokesperson.

Automated technology has the potential to transform our transportation systems and make our roads safer. However, incidents like this Tesla recall highlight the importance of thorough testing, monitoring, and continuous improvement of autonomous systems. It is crucial for companies like Tesla to collaborate closely with regulatory authorities to ensure the safety and reliability of their technologies.
As the industry continues to advance, it is essential for manufacturers and regulators to work hand in hand to establish clear standards, guidelines, and protocols for autonomous systems. This will help to build trust and confidence in these technologies, ultimately paving the way for a safer and more efficient future of transportation.
