The company made this announcement following an investigation that revealed the autopilot safety system was not sufficient to prevent driver misuse.

The recall affects various Tesla models,⁢ including the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, all manufactured between 2012 and 2023, and equipped with the “Autosteer”⁢ function.

“In certain circumstances when Autosteer is ⁣engaged, the prominence and scope ⁢of the feature’s controls ⁢may‍ not be sufficient to ⁢prevent driver ⁢misuse,” stated the recall notice.

According to the National ⁣Highway Traffic‍ Safety Administration (NHTSA), the autopilot ⁣system can give drivers a false sense⁣ of safety and may be misused in dangerous situations‌ where Tesla’s technology cannot safely navigate⁢ the road.

A new software update aims⁢ to provide drivers with more warnings when they are ‍not paying attention while using the “Autosteer” function, ultimately enhancing road safety, as per the⁣ NHTSA.

The NHTSA⁤ conducted a review of nearly 1,000 ‌crashes‌ involving the autopilot system since 2021, including frontal ⁤impacts ⁤and impacts resulting from inadvertent disengagement of the system.

Tesla representatives have met with the agency multiple times during the investigation.

The investigation⁢ found that in certain⁤ circumstances‌ with “Autosteer,” the driver may not maintain responsibility ⁤for vehicle operation, ⁢be unprepared to intervene when ⁣necessary, ‌or fail to recognize when Autosteer⁢ is canceled or not engaged, increasing the risk of a crash.

Tesla has ‌expressed disagreement with the agency’s report, but on December 5th, they voluntarily agreed to recall and provide a free software update to affected ⁤vehicles.

The update will incorporate additional controls and alerts to further encourage drivers to ‍adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged, according to the safety‍ report.

Meanwhile, an NHTSA spokesperson ⁤stated on Wednesday that the investigation ⁢remains open as they monitor the effectiveness of Tesla’s remedies and continue working with the automaker to ensure the⁢ highest level of safety.

“Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety, but only when⁢ deployed responsibly. Today’s action is an example of improving automated systems by prioritizing safety,” added the spokesperson.
