Tesla drivers face challenges charging vehicles in freezing Chicago weather
Tesla Owners in Chicago Battle Cold Weather Charging Issues
Tesla owners in the greater Chicago area are facing a challenging battle when it comes to charging their electric vehicles in the frigid cold. According to a report, at least one charging station in Evergreen Park, Illinois, experienced a mass gathering of Teslas on Monday as the subzero temperatures caused the batteries in the EVs to die.
As a result, numerous Teslas were left sitting in the parking lot, while some of the charging stations themselves began to fail in the extreme cold. Brandon Welbourne, a Tesla driver, expressed his frustration after spending over five hours at the charging station without being able to charge his car properly. What should have been a 45-minute charge turned into a two-hour ordeal.
During his time at the station, Welbourne witnessed approximately 10 vehicles being towed due to the battery issues. This situation highlights the significant challenges faced by Tesla owners in cold weather conditions.

Tesla has acknowledged the problem that cold weather poses to their vehicles and has provided instructions to drivers. They advise keeping the vehicle’s charge above 20% during the cold front. The company has also made several updates to enhance the driving experience in freezing temperatures, including improved thermal performance, quicker Supercharging, and enhanced cabin conditioning.
