Tesla employee leaks personal data of 75,000+ colleagues.
An Insider Breach at Tesla: Protecting Employee Data
An unfortunate incident occurred at Tesla, where the personal data of 75,735 current and former employees was breached. However, the company took immediate action to address the situation and protect its workforce.
Tesla was alerted about the breach on May 10, and wasted no time in notifying the affected employees. The breach was attributed to “insider wrongdoing” and included sensitive information like Social Security numbers.
“A foreign media outlet (named Handelsblatt) informed Tesla on May 10, 2023 that it had obtained Tesla confidential information,” the company explained. “The investigation revealed that two former Tesla employees misappropriated the information in violation of Tesla’s IT security and data protection policies and shared it with the media outlet. The outlet has stated that it does not intend to publish the personal information, and in any event, is legally prohibited from using it inappropriately.”
Fortunately, there is no evidence of the breached data being misused to cause harm. Nevertheless, Tesla is taking proactive measures to support its employees. It is offering 12 months of Experian’s IdentityWorks credit monitoring and identity theft service to those affected, ensuring their peace of mind.
“Among other things, we identified and filed lawsuits against the two former employees,” Tesla revealed. “These lawsuits resulted in the seizure of the former employees’ electronic devices that were believed to have contained the Tesla information. Tesla also obtained court orders that prohibit the former employees from further use, access, or dissemination of the data, subject to criminal penalties.”
At Tesla, safeguarding employee data is of utmost importance. The company is committed to taking legal action against those who breach its trust and ensuring that the affected individuals receive the necessary support.
Unionization Efforts and Tesla’s Workforce
Meanwhile, at Tesla’s Buffalo Gigafactory, a group of AutoPilot employees is currently attempting to unionize. This development has sparked controversy, with some union leaders claiming that their termination was a direct result of their unionization efforts. However, Tesla has vehemently denied these allegations, labeling them as ”false.”
Last year, Tesla received an astounding 3.6 million job applications, a testament to its popularity as an employer. The company proudly boasts a global workforce of 128,000 employees, reflecting a significant increase of 29,000 individuals.
