TCU’s “Queer Art of Drag” Course
Texas Christian University (TCU) is offering an exciting and groundbreaking course called “Queer Art of Drag.” In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore the world of drag by creating their own unique drag persona and performing on stage. This course is a must for anyone interested in the art of drag and its cultural significance.
Embracing Drag as an Art Form
Led by the talented Dr. Nino Testa, who himself has a drag persona named “Maria Von Clapp,” this course celebrates drag as an art form that challenges societal norms and fosters queer community and joy. Through this course, students will gain a deeper understanding of the power of drag in creating social critique and promoting queer world-making.
Course Requirements and Assignments
To excel in this course, students will need to participate in a live group number during the Spectrum Drag Show. Additionally, they will be required to write a comprehensive “drag bibliography” that explores the inspirations behind their drag personas. Furthermore, students will showcase their talent through a minute-long lip sync performance in front of the class.
Exploring Your Drag Persona
One of the exciting assignments in this course is the “My Drag Worksheet.” This assignment encourages students to name and describe their drag persona, create a unique drag greeting, and strike a pose. The accompanying “Drag Vision Board” provides thought-provoking questions to help students reflect on their drag persona and its significance.
