A North Texas county commissioner was stabbed and her husband was killed at the hands of their grandson, authorities said on Monday.
Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell sustained injuries during the attack at her home. Her husband, Fred, was pronounced dead due to stab wounds early Monday morning.
The Lewisville Police Department charged the couple’s 23-year-old grandson, Mitchell Reinacher, with murder after the incident. Reinacher, who allegedly carried out the attack using a serrated kitchen knife, was found at the scene of the incident and was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Bobbie Mitchell has been Denton County’s commissioner since 2000 after previously serving as mayor of Lewisville, located in the county. She is in stable condition and received treatment for her wounds, according to police.
“We are very thankful for the outreach everyone has extended to us on behalf of our family,” the commissioner’s family said in a statement, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle. “Our mother offers her blessings to all who have reached out. We will provide updates on a later date for the funeral service of our beloved father, Fred Mitchell.”
Police have not yet named a motive for Reinacher’s alleged attack on his grandparents.

Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth released a statement, calling the incident “a heartbreaking tragedy.”
“I extend my sincerest condolences to the Mitchell family,” he said in a post to X. “Commissioner Mitchell has spent years supporting the residents of Denton County, now her family needs our prayers and compassion. I stand ready to assist in anyway needed.”
