Tragedy Strikes in Brownsville, Texas

Suspect Identified in Fatal Collision

On Sunday, May 7, 2023, a fatal collision occurred in Brownsville, Texas, outside the Ozanam Center, a migrant and homeless shelter. The collision resulted in the deaths of eight migrants who were waiting at a nearby bus stop. The driver, George Alvarez, has been identified as the suspect in the case.

Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda stated that Alvarez ran a red light and lost control of his Land Rover, which rolled onto its side and plowed over 18 people. Out of the 18, eight of them were killed.

Alvarez has been legally charged and arraigned on eight charges of manslaughter, as well as ten counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon. According to the police, he has a lengthy criminal history.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating whether the collision was deliberate. Memorials have been set up at the crash location to honor the victims.

The deadly incident comes as border communities like Brownsville are reportedly preparing for an influx of migrants when Title 42, a public health emergency provision, expires on Thursday. In anticipation of Title 42’s expiration, United States Customs and Border Protection officers have already seen an increase in migrants at the border with Mexico.
