Texas National Guard Arrives in El Paso

In what’s being described as an “incredible scene,” hundreds of Texas National Guard troops arrived in El Paso this week. The guardsmen were carrying rifles and lined up along the border by the river with a large line of humvees behind them. Other troops began deploying razor wire along the river to deter migrants hoping to cross the water. Governor Greg Abbott was credited with deploying the troops after a caravan of more than 1,000 migrants crossed the river into El Paso over the weekend. The city had been bracing for an expected flood of as many as 14,000 migrants per day when Title 42 expires, though that change is currently on hold while the courts try to sort out how the measure will be handled. A huge Texas National Guard presence arrived at the southern border in El Paso overnight as the Texas city prepares for an even larger influx of migrants once Title 42 ends.

Troops holding rifles stood guard at the U.S. side of the border across from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico Tuesday morning backdropped by a line of humvees.

New fencing at the Rio Grande River bank was also erected to stop migrants from crossing with pandemic-era expulsion policy Title 42 just hours away from ending.

The show of force apparently had the intended effect. Migrants quickly began moving away from the area. The remaining stragglers were described by local reporters as being “a small group.”

Why this didn’t happen sooner remains an open question. El Paso is currently in pretty bad shape. Every bed in every shelter is currently full and the El Paso airport has converted an entire terminal into a migrant shelter, with thousands of illegal migrants sleeping on the floors under Red Cross blankets. Local churches and charitable groups are reportedly running out of resources and their services are being strained to the breaking point.

While this show of force and the dispersal of the migrants on the Mexican side of the river may sound like good news, it’s only a stopgap measure. Texas doesn’t have enough troops to line the entire border, so the migrants will simply go to another area that’s unguarded. (Along with the cartels’ drug mules and human traffickers.) And as Fox News has regularly reported, the cartels are well-organized and technologically savvy. They monitor the movements of the border patrol and other military or law enforcement groups using night vision scopes and drones. They report which portions of the border are clear to the rest of the gangs and focus their trafficking activity in those areas.

It’s good to see Greg Abbott taking action in this fashion, but what about the federal government? Does the White House have any new border security plans to announce? And how about our “border czar,” Kamala Harris? Will she be doing anything? Check out what happened when a reporter tried asking Karine Jean-Pierre about the veep’s efforts to secure the border.

I guess KJP will need to “circle back” on that question. She doesn’t “have anything” for us in terms of what work Kamala Harris has been doing to end this ongoing disaster. And if you have any more annoying questions along those lines you’ll need to go ask her yourself. In other words, it’s just another day in the Biden White House.
