Texas takes back island from Mexican cartels to secure border.
In the Fight Against Mexican Cartels, Texas Law Enforcement Takes Control of Dangerous Island
In a bold move to combat Mexican cartels, Texas law enforcement has recently seized control of a treacherous island that was being used by human traffickers.
The Epoch Times had an exclusive interview with Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, who described Fronton Island as potentially “the most violent part” of the Texas-Mexico border. Fronton Island, located in the Rio Grande River, belongs to Texas and has become a notorious hotspot for drug and human trafficking, as well as dangerous cartel activities in recent months.
According to the General Land Office, Fronton Island has been a hub for criminal operations.
Commissioner Buckingham revealed that the island had been a lawless sanctuary for cartels seeking refuge. However, on September 7, she issued a letter authorizing Texas law enforcement to access the 170-acre island, which is owned by the state.
Previously, Fronton Island was a battleground where rival cartels engaged in nightly shootouts with fully automatic weapons. However, Commissioner Buckingham revealed, “Law enforcement set foot on the island for the first time on Monday [Oct. 2].” The island has now been reclaimed by an elite force of Texas Rangers, who have discovered hidden caches of weapons and other undisclosed findings.
With the Texas flag triumphantly planted on the island, Commissioner Buckingham sees this operation as a significant victory against illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. However, she emphasizes that the problem extends far beyond this single region.
“Texas is still being inundated with illegal immigrants,” Commissioner Buckingham stated. “We are witnessing millions and millions of people crossing the border.” To put this into perspective, she highlighted the disparity between the New York mayor’s complaints about thousands of people entering the city and the much larger numbers expected in Eagle Pass, Texas. The influx of migrants in Eagle Pass is equivalent to “2.7 million people illegally coming to New York every week.” Furthermore, she noted that many of these migrants are not just family units but also a significant number of young, military-aged males.
Commissioner Buckingham expressed concern about the recent surges in illegal immigration, which are setting new records at the border. She mentioned the numerous videos circulating online that depict thousands of people storming across the border, describing it as “literally an invasion.”
For those who are processed by Border Patrol and granted entry into the country, their earliest court date for legal proceedings will be in 2027. Commissioner Buckingham remarked, “With court dates years away, many of them will simply disappear.”

According to Commissioner Buckingham, “nearly everybody who comes across the border has a wristband that indicates which cartel they belong to.”
She further explained, “Everyone who comes across is owned by somebody, so you’re basically seeing the largest increase in slavery that this world has ever seen. Many are now forced into the drug trade or human trafficking because the cartels control who crosses the border.”
Commissioner Buckingham emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “With enough fentanyl crossing our border to kill every man, woman, and child in the United States, this has to stop.” She highlighted Texas’ efforts to create criminal records for individuals who break the law by crossing the border, making them easily identifiable. However, she criticized President Joe Biden’s policies, which often result in criminals being turned back to their home countries only to return and cross the border again.
While Texas continues to fight on multiple fronts, Commissioner Buckingham urged people to consider their choices when voting for Congress and the president. She emphasized the need for leaders who will enforce policies to halt illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
In September alone, Border Patrol encountered a record-breaking 269,735 migrants at the border, with 218,763 attempting to enter the country illegally. During fiscal year 2023, a record 169 individuals on the terror watch list were apprehended, and over 25,500 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the border.
Requests for comment from the White House and Department of Homeland Security went unanswered.
