Texas sends over 120 people on inaugural migrant flight to Chicago
Texas Sends Plane Full of Migrants to Chicago in Unprecedented Move
In a bold and unprecedented move, Texas has flown over 120 illegal migrants to Chicago this week. This marks the first time that Texas has sent a plane full of migrants to the city.
The flight originated from the border city of El Paso and arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday.
The Texas Department of Emergency Management chartered the plane, according to a spokesperson from the city of Chicago said on Wednesday.
Migrants Escape Before Police Arrival
Upon landing, airport police received a call about the migrants, but two individuals managed to escape the area in an Uber before the police could apprehend them.
Chicago has been grappling with a migrant crisis for several months now.
Since last year, over 26,000 migrants have arrived in the city, making it the third-largest destination for migrants in the country. Currently, nearly 1,200 migrants are still camping out at O’Hare Airport and various police stations.
To address the situation, Chicago has allocated a staggering $29.3 million to construct large winterized tents to provide shelter for thousands of migrants during the freezing winter months.
This move by Texas comes in response to Chicago’s crackdown on buses transporting migrants from Texas. Bus drivers have resorted to dropping off migrants in nearby cities to avoid penalties, such as fines and towing, for unloading migrants at unauthorized locations or without proper documentation.
Texas Governor Defends the Decision
Texas Governor Abbott defended the decision, stating, “Sanctuary city Chicago started obstructing and targeting our busing mission. Texas will now expand our operation to include flights to Chicago. Until Biden steps up to secure the border, we will continue to provide overwhelmed Texas border towns with much-needed relief.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson, on the other hand, accused the Texas governor of engaging in “lawlessness.”

Chicago City Council member Byron Sigcho-Lopez criticized Texas’ actions as a “political stunt” that only exacerbates tensions, dangers, and issues within the city.
Since last year, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, has transported over 80,000 migrants to cities governed by Democrats, including Chicago, in an effort to alleviate the strain on El Paso and other overwhelmed border areas.
Meanwhile, the number of migrants illegally crossing the border continues to reach record levels.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is currently dealing with over 10,000 migrant encounters each day.
In October alone, border authorities encountered a staggering total of 240,988 migrants at the border, making it the highest October on record, according to CBP.
Why is a collaborative approach between states like Texas and cities like Chicago essential for effectively addressing the migrant crisis
Nauthorized locations in Chicago. This has led to an influx of migrants in these neighboring cities, placing an increased burden on their resources and infrastructure.
The decision by Texas to send a plane full of migrants to Chicago is seen as a retaliatory measure against Chicago’s strict enforcement policies. By transferring the migrants directly to Chicago, Texas aims to alleviate some of the pressure on the neighboring cities and force Chicago to address the issue head-on.
However, the arrival of the migrants in Chicago has not been without controversy. As mentioned earlier, two individuals managed to escape before the police could apprehend them. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of security measures and the potential implications for public safety.
Chicago’s migrant crisis is not unique. Many other cities across the United States are grappling with similar challenges as the number of migrants seeking asylum continues to rise. The root causes of these mass migrations must be addressed to find a sustainable solution.
Chicago’s response to the crisis has been commendable. By allocating a significant amount of funds to construct winterized tents, the city is ensuring that migrants have a safe place to stay during the harsh winter months. This demonstrates compassion and a commitment to human rights.
It is clear that a collaborative approach is needed to address the migrant crisis effectively. States like Texas and cities like Chicago must work together to find comprehensive solutions that prioritize the well-being of individuals seeking refuge while also considering the impact on local communities.
In conclusion, Texas’s decision to send a plane full of migrants to Chicago is an unprecedented move that highlights the complex and challenging nature of the migrant crisis. While it may be seen as a retaliatory action, it also underscores the urgent need for collaboration and cooperation between states and cities to find sustainable solutions. The journey towards resolving this crisis will require empathy, understanding, and a commitment to upholding humanitarian values.
