Friday marked the first chance for fans and teams of the MLB to see it in action. It was not surprising that there was a violation.

It’s not surprising that the pitch clock was first victim.

Manny Machado, Padres’ star pitcher, took too long to reach the box during the first inning in his team’s spring training game. Baseball suffered its first pitch clock penalty for the season.

It wasn’t hard.

Pitch Clock to Make Substantial Changes

It is obvious how difficult it will be to adjust for all players that a violation occurred so quickly.

Despite this, the pace of play changed almost instantly.

Bats were faster and pitches were delivered in a better, quicker rhythm. The game also had a much better flow.

It may be hard for pitchers as well as hitters adjust to their usual routines but once they do it, this appears like an enormous net positive.

Machado acknowledged that it would be difficult for him after the match.

“I’m gonna have to make a big adjustment. I might be 0-1 down a lot this year,” He said. “It’s super fast. There’s definitely an adjustment it’s gonna be.”

Manny was certainly in the middle of the baseball world when spring training began.
