The celebrities and publications that left X after the 2024 election
The celebrities and publications that left X following the 2024 election
With the 2024 election season in the rearview mirror, many celebrities and personalities have opted to leave behind the social media platform X by announcing their departures.
The election saw President-elect Donald Trump defeat Vice President Kamala Harris, after which some celebrities, such as Ellen DeGeneres, moved out of the United States. While other personalities have yet to take such drastic action, others are choosing to quit using X, which has been massively revamped since Elon Musk bought the platform back when it was known as Twitter in 2022.
MORE ARE USING AND LIKING X SINCE MUSK BOUGHT IT
As such, here are the liberal celebrities who have chosen to post their views elsewhere.
Don Lemon
The ex-CNN anchor announced his decision to leave X about a week after the election, stating he felt the platform did not serve its “purpose” of providing free speech. He also cited the platform’s updated terms of service and a report stating that lawsuits against the platform would be heard “in courthouses that are a hub for conservatives.”
In March, Lemon launched his own show, The Don Lemon Show, on X, similar to the popular show hosted by ex-Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson. However, his deal with X was called off following his interview with Musk, with Lemon suing the billionaire over the called-off deal.
Stephen King
Author Stephen King was well known on X for his frequent criticism of Trump in the 2020s. In announcing his departure, King said X, which he referred to as Twitter, had “just become too toxic.” He suggested readers to follow him on Threads, the alternative to X launched by Meta and Mark Zuckerberg in 2023.
I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic. Follow me on Threads, if you like.

Sunny Hostin
The co-host of The View revealed in a podcast appearance that she chose to leave X because she did not want to be “affiliated” with anything related to Musk, saying it was the “most patriotic thing I could do.” Musk chose to endorse Trump after the first assassination attempt in July.
Hostin’s departure comes about two years after her fellow co-host, Whoopi Goldberg, deleted her account due to Musk’s takeover.
Joy Reid
MSNBC host Joy Reid said on TikTok that she had not posted to X for some time but stopped short of deleting her account as she was “worried” about impersonation of her. However, following the election, Reid had decided it was “just not worth it” and opted to delete it, saying she felt as if a weight had been “lifted off my shoulders” after deleting her X account.

She also directed her TikTok followers to follow her on Threads and BlueSky, another X alternative that has spiked in popularity following the election.
Mark Hamill
The Star Wars actor had made a name for himself on X as a major critic of Trump both during his first presidency and ahead of the 2024 election, including criticizing the former president for visiting Laken Riley’s family after she was killed by an illegal immigrant. Following the election, he has since migrated to BlueSky, jokingly calling himself a “#TwitterQuitter.”
Now that I’ve fled Leon’s site for bluer skies, I’m sure I’ll be called an #Ex-X, but personally, I’ll always consider myself a #TwitterQuitter.

Jamie Lee Curtis
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has also left Musk’s platform, revealing the decision to her followers in an Instagram post, in which she asked God to “grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.”
Lizzo
Musician Lizzo had campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election, which included making a claim that a Harris victory would make the entire United States “like Detroit.” She has not posted on the platform since Nov. 13, when she posted a link to her BlueSky account.

The Guardian
The Guardian wrote in mid-November that it had been contemplating a halt on posting on X for some time, saying that the benefits of posting to the platform were outweighed by the negatives. The newspaper also said that the election showed how X has become “a toxic media platform” that Musk has used “to shape political discourse.”

BlueSky could be set to hit it off big in 2025, as it quickly reached over 1 million new users after the election. Whether or not it will be able to retain these users as time progresses, however, is up in the air, as Threads previously had a strong start before faltering off shortly afterward.
In November, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) became the first BlueSky user to hit 1 million followers.
At X, protecting our children is our top priority. As I’ve always said, freedom of speech and safety can and must coexist. And as a mother, it’s personal.
When X testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last January, we committed to working with Congress on child safety…

Heading into 2025, X CEO Linda Yaccarino stressed the need for Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act, as protecting children and upholding free speech is the platform’s “top priority.” Musk replied to Yaccarino in agreement, writing that “protecting kids should always be priority #1.”
