Lionsgate acquires rights to sub-license The Chosen globally for wider reach.
Lionsgate Acquires Worldwide Distribution Rights to The Chosen
Lionsgate, the studio and distributor behind Jesus Revolution, has acquired the worldwide sub-licensing distribution rights to The Chosen. The agreement between the award-winning multi-season streaming series based on the life of Jesus and Lionsgate was announced on Tuesday.
“The more I learned about The Chosen, the more I wanted to ensure that it is on the best platforms across the globe. It’s no surprise that an artfully crafted story about such an important historical figure, unlike anything done before, would be in great demand,” Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television Distribution Jim Packer told the Washington Examiner. “The multi-season approach has allowed The Chosen to consistently build its audience and generate a unique level of engagement. We’re excited by the opportunity to elevate this incredible property to the next level of worldwide recognition and popularity.”
The Chosen’s creator Dallas Jenkins called the show’s new partnership with Lionsgate “perfect for us.”
“We’ll continue to do what we do best unabated, and they’ll expand our efforts with their tremendous distribution team,” Jenkins said.
Global Phenomenon
The biblical drama has grown from a crowdfunded project into a global phenomenon with more than 110 million viewers in 175 countries. The Chosen also has plans to make the show available in 600 languages.
Continued Partnership
Angel Studios told the Washington Examiner that the partnership between The Chosen and Lionsgate follows an agreement made between the show and Angel in late 2022 that made room for additional partners to support their mission. The Chosen will continue to be an Angel Studios original, with Lionsgate obtaining sub-licensing rights of any current or future seasons after Angel’s exclusive first window of distribution via its app and The Chosen app passes, which would also follow any theatrical release.
Where to Watch
Three seasons of The Chosen have been produced thus far, with a fourth in the works. In addition to the Angel Studios and The Chosen apps, viewers can watch the biblical series on Peacock/Amazon Prime, Pure Flix, and Netflix.
