Lovitz responded, “As a member of Congress, I voted NO against a resolution condemning antisemitism and recognizing the right of our ally, Israel, to exist. Then, a few days later, wished the same people, Happy Hanukkah. It would be laughable, if your hypocrisy wasn’t so disgusting.”
Others also criticized Tlaib’s post. Pradheep Shanker tweeted, “I can’t imagine a more dishonest tweet than this. Does she even know what the story of Hanukkah is?”

Annika Rothstein added, “This holiday celebrates Jewish independence, pride, and sovereignty in our own land, as well as our consistent refusal to bend the knee to heathens. Take your universalist jibber jabber elsewhere, you’re no friend of ours.”

@persianjewess tweeted, “I wonder if Rashida Tlaib realizes that #Hanukkah is literally the celebration of the successful #Jewish war against the Greeks who tried to ethnically cleanse indigenous Jews from #Israel. 800 years before the creation of Islam.”

What implications did Tlaib’s voting against a resolution condemning anti-Semitism and her subsequent Hanukkah greeting have on her relationship with the Jewish community
H independence, pride, and sovereignty in our own land, as well as our consistent refusal to bend the knee to heathens. Take your universalist jibber jabber elsewhere, you’re no friend of ours.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat representing Michigan’s 12th congressional district, faced criticism from actor and comedian Jon Lovitz over her recent Hanukkah greeting to the Jewish community. In his scathing post on X, Lovitz called out Tlaib for her “chutzpah” in extending good wishes to Jews while simultaneously voting against a resolution condemning anti-Semitism and supporting Israel’s right to exist.
Tlaib’s tweet, which was sent on December 7, 2023, read, “Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish neighbors in #12thDistrictStrong and beyond. May this be a time of love and community for you and your loved ones.” While on the surface, the message seemed innocuous, Lovitz saw it differently in light of Tlaib’s voting record.
Lovitz’s response to Tlaib’s tweet did not mince words. He wrote, “As a member of Congress, I voted NO against a resolution condemning anti-Semitism and recognizing the right of our ally, Israel, to exist. Then, a few days later, wished the same people Happy Hanukkah. It would be laughable, if your hypocrisy wasn’t so disgusting.”
Lovitz was not alone in his criticism of Tlaib. Pradheep Shanker, a Twitter user, expressed his disbelief at Tlaib’s tweet, stating, “I can’t imagine a more dishonest tweet than this. Does she even know what the story of Hanukkah is?” Annika Rothstein also chimed in, emphasizing the significance of Hanukkah to the Jewish people and accusing Tlaib of holding universalist views that do not align with Jewish values.
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, holds great historical and religious significance for Jews. It commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days instead of one. It is a holiday of Jewish independence, pride, and sovereignty in their ancestral land. Many Jews around the world take this opportunity to reflect on their resilience and dedication to their faith.
Tlaib’s voting against a resolution condemning anti-Semitism and her subsequent Hanukkah greeting raised questions about her true intentions and commitment to the Jewish community. Lovitz’s criticism reminded people of the importance of consistency and sincerity in political actions and statements.
While Tlaib’s tweet may have represented a seemingly harmless holiday greeting, its underlying implications and the timing of her voting record struck a nerve with many. Lovitz and others called attention to the apparent hypocrisy and questioned Tlaib’s understanding of the Jewish faith and its traditions.
Whether Tlaib’s Hanukkah greeting was a genuine expression of goodwill or a calculated move, it has certainly ignited conversation and criticism. As public figures, politicians must be prepared to face scrutiny for their words and actions, especially when they appear contradictory or hypocritical. Lovitz and others have drawn attention to this tension, reminding us that sincerity should be at the heart of all political discourse and gestures of inclusion.
