‘The Flash’ sees biggest-ever second-weekend box office decline among DC movies.
The Flash: A Box Office Flop
The Flash, DC’s latest superhero film, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. After a lackluster opening weekend, the movie suffered a massive 72.5% drop in its second weekend at the domestic box office.
Starring Ezra Miller, The Flash only managed to earn $15.3 million in the United States during its second weekend, according to Direct.com. This steep decline follows its disappointing $55 million opening weekend.
This drop of nearly 73% sets a new record for a DC film in its second weekend, surpassing the previous record set by The Suicide Squad during the height of the pandemic in 2020.
Not only is The Flash’s box office performance dismal for a DC film, but it also ranks among the worst second-weekend drops in superhero movie history. The 1997 film Steel holds the top spot with a 78% drop, followed by Morbius in 2022 with 73%. Now, The Flash brings up the rear.

The Flash had a budget of $220 million, excluding marketing and other major costs, which are estimated to be around $65 million. Currently, it has made a domestic total of $87.6 million and is projected to reach a final total of $110-120 million domestically and $210 million worldwide.
In terms of box office rankings, The Flash landed in third place domestically, trailing behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Disney Pixar’s Elemental.
There has been much speculation about what led to the film’s failure. Some fans attribute it to superhero fatigue, while others point to the controversy surrounding Ezra Miller, the film’s lead actor.
Last year, Miller made headlines for multiple arrests. In August 2022, the actor, who identifies as “non-binary,” announced that they were entering a treatment facility for complex mental health issues.
“Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” Miller’s representative told Variety.
Miller’s past behavior has caused alarm and upset, and they are committed to doing the necessary work to regain a healthy and productive life.
In addition to the legal troubles, Miller was arrested in Hawaii for disorderly conduct and faced accusations of grooming a young girl with “cult-like” behavior since she was 12 years old.
