‘The Little Mermaid’ Actress Halle Bailey Praises Feminist Storyline Updates, Says It’s More Than ‘Wanting To Leave The Ocean For A Boy’
“The Little Mermaid” actress Halle Bailey just hinted at some changes Disney is making for the live-action remake, which hits theaters this spring.
The 22-year-old actress discussed her commitment to playing Princess Ariel and how she felt about the changes during an interview with the Edition by Modern Luxury magazine.
Bailey described filming in the waters for up to 13 hours a day, saying,” I pushed myself as far as I’ve actually pressed myself in life.” And I believe that Ariel’s meaning was to let you know that you’ve always had it in you.
Since its 1989 release, the animated version of” The Little Mermaid” has grown to be one of the studio’s most well-liked movies. Although some details were altered in the Disney release, it was based on the well-known Hans Christian Anderson fantasy by the same name. The live-action version may now come with even more posts.
Bailey said,” I’m really thrilled for my version of the movie because we’ve obviously changed that viewpoint of even her wanting to leave the sea for a boy.” It is significantly larger than that. It has to do with who she is, what she wants, her purpose, rights, and her life.
“As women we are amazing, we are independent, we are modern, we are everything and above,” she continued. “And I’m glad that Disney is updating some of those themes.”
Combined reviews greeted the initial trailer’s September 2022 release, while a longer version made its debut earlier this month at the 95th Academy Awards. The underground scenes were dark and difficult to see, according to reviewers. Bailey’s cast by the theater was also questioned by some viewers, which immediately sparked accusations of bigotry because the actress is dark.
“As a black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore,” Bailey told The Face of her experience with backlash during a February interview. ”When [Chlöe and I] first signed to Parkwood, [Beyoncé] was always like: ’I never read my comments. Don’t ever read the comments.’ Honestly, when the teaser came out, I was at the D23 Expo and I was so happy. I didn’t see any of the negativity.”

It’s not about civilization, I know people are like. However, now that I’m her, she continued,” People don’t understand that when you’re black, there’s this whole other community.” ” Seeing ourselves is so critical to us.”
Rob Marshall, the director of” The Little Mermaid,” previously stated to Entertainment Weekly that he had” no agenda” when choosing a character to play Ariel and that Bailey’s race had no bearing on the choice because they auditioned” every ethnicity.”
“We just were looking for the best actor for the role, period. The end,” Marshall said in December. “We saw everybody and every ethnicity. [The goal was to find someone who can be] incredibly strong, passionate, beautiful, smart, clever [and with] a great deal of fire and joy.”
On May 26,” The Little Mermaid” makes its theater debut.
