Rainn Wilson, ‘The Office’ star, opens up about ‘traumatic’ childhood abuse in a loveless home.
Rainn Wilson Opens Up About His Upbringing and Comedy
In a candid interview on Steven Bartlett’s “The Diary of A CEO” podcast, Rainn Wilson, best known for his role as Dwight Schrute on “The Office,” shared insights into his difficult childhood and how it influenced his career in comedy.
Wilson, now 57, revealed that he experienced pain, anxiety, depression, and addiction throughout his life. He attributed these struggles to imbalances and trauma he endured as a child.
At the age of 2, Wilson’s mother left, and he and his father moved to Nicaragua before settling in Washington state. It was during this time that he faced various forms of abuse.
Reflecting on his journey, Wilson explained that he turned to acting as a means of finding acceptance that he couldn’t find at home.
He emphasized the connection between comedy and painful backgrounds, stating, “Comedy is what you plug in to shift your perspective away from pain and trauma.” Wilson pointed out that many great comedians have experienced significant suffering in their lives, and comedy became their way of moving forward.
Despite the challenges he faced, Wilson expressed gratitude for his difficult upbringing. He believes that if he had a happy and well-balanced childhood, his career as a successful actor would not have been possible.
