The Crucial Question: Israel or Palestinians?
The Only Question That Matters When it Comes to Supporting Israel or the Palestinians
They didn’t just knock on doors, they went door-to-door, ruthlessly dragging Jewish people out of their homes. Some were kidnapped, while others were brutally slaughtered and left to rot.
But let’s take a closer look. Let’s try to understand the perspective of the murderers. After all, they believed they had legitimate grievances.
One of their grievances was the Treaty of Versailles.
Make no mistake, the recent events in Israel over the weekend were reminiscent of the crimes committed by the Gestapo during World War II. Hamas used Nazi-like tactics to pursue their sinister objectives.
It’s important to note that when we talk about objectives, we’re not referring to the millions of individual Palestinians who may have different and more reasonable goals. In a different context, those goals might hold weight and significance.
However, in the context of Hamas and their Nazi-like methods, those goals become morally insignificant.
When we think about the crimes of the Third Reich, we don’t dwell on the Treaty of Versailles or the miseries of the Weimar Republic. Those legitimate grievances fade into insignificance.
This brings us to the moral context, which presents us with the ultimate question when deciding whether to support Israel or the Palestinians in their long-standing conflict over disputed land.
Let’s be clear, this question is not the only one that matters in the current conflict. There are many other moral questions at play. However, this question takes precedence over other grievances.
So, let’s turn to the words of author and philosopher Sam Harris for insight.
Before we proceed, it’s important to acknowledge that while Harris may have controversial views on other subjects, he does offer some redeeming qualities.
In a 2014 clip from his podcast, Harris posed a thought-provoking question about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: “What would each side do if they had the power to do it?”
This question gets to the core of each side’s intentions.
Harris pointed out that we know the Jews have no genocidal intentions because they have the power to commit genocide if they chose to. On the other hand, he described the charter of Hamas as explicitly genocidal, with many Palestinians harboring a desire to kill all the Jews in Israel if given the opportunity.
Of course, this doesn’t mean every Palestinian shares this sentiment, but a significant number of them, along with Muslims worldwide, would.
Colin Wright, an evolutionary biologist, shared this Harris clip on social media, emphasizing its relevance to the moral difference between Israel and its enemies.
This is a pertinent clip from Sam Harris on the moral difference between Israel and her enemies.
The moral difference comes down to understanding the answer to this question: what would each side do if they had the power to do it?

Another clip shared by Wright explores the moral difference between using human shields and being deterred by them.
Hamas uses human shields as a defense, relying on their opponent’s respect for life. Israelis, on the other hand, see human shields as a deterrent.
Harris highlights this difference, stating that it reveals everything we need to know about the moral imbalance between Israel and Hamas.

In short, Hamas terrorists behave like Nazis because they think and talk like Nazis.
A compilation of Hitlerian statements by Hamas officials reveals their deep-seated hatred towards Jews. Former Hamas minister of culture Atallah Abu Al-Subh referred to Jews as the most despicable and contemptible nation. Hamas representative Dr. Yussuf Al-Sharafi claimed that the Jewish faith is based on murder.
Furthermore, recent polling data shows a surge in Palestinian support for Hamas. While this support may fluctuate, it only strengthens the comparison between Hamas and the Nazis.
Just as many Germans after World War I believed they had legitimate grievances, many Palestinians today hold similar sentiments. While we don’t need to evaluate these grievances purely on practical grounds, we must examine the moral behavior of those involved.
When we think about the suffering of German women raped by Soviet troops in 1945, we don’t blame the women or applaud the soldiers for their vengeance. The same applies to the Palestinian woman in the video. We want her to be safe and well, but that feeling doesn’t lead us to support Hamas.
Ultimately, the question that matters most in this conflict is: “What would each side do if they had the power to do it?”

These questions raised by Harris and highlighted by Wright provide us with a clear distinction between Israel and the Palestinians in terms of their moral intentions and actions. They shed light on the fundamental question of what each side would do if they had the power to do it.
When it comes to supporting Israel or the Palestinians, this question is crucial. It helps us understand the moral imbalance between the two sides and the impact of their respective goals and intentions.
