Last weekend, G20 finance ministers adjourned with no joint statement as two of their members, China and Russia, refused to condemn. “in the strongest terms” Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine. Beijing had also abstained just a few days prior from a similar U.N. General Assembly resolution.
Despite the widespread support in the world for Ukraine, China’s Communist Party believes it can attract European countries Wang Yi, a senior diplomat, considers malleable. These include France, Italy and Hungary. With the latter, under Viktor Orbán, Beijing is actually Making inroads.
CCP considers the war to be beneficial and a distraction from China’s territorial ambitions. A Poll Morning Consult published a report last week that found strong belief among Chinese citizens in the fact that Russia’s war benefits their country.
Beijing uses the war as a pretext for expanding its influence in the “intercontinental”.Global South“by appearing to be a neutral peacemaker. Beijing’s support of the negotiations, even though Russia still occupies large areas of Ukraine, effectively rewards Russia, by pushing Kyiv into making concessions. This would open the door to the CCP’s planned future aggression against Taiwan.
Xi Jinping may have encouraged Vladimir Putin during their meeting 20 days prior to the invasion. They issued a joint statement in which they expressed their gratitude. “no-limits friendship” “new era” international relations, agreeing $117.5 billion in oil and gas deals, which later mitigated the effect of sanctions.
Within days of the invasion, Beijing embraced Russia’s ideology and blamed the United States. They rationalized it as an act of war. “legitimate” Russian national security and repeated Russian disinformation. The United States funded a network secret bioweapon laboratories across Ukraine.
Beijing didn’t fool Kyiv. “The only country who really benefits now from this … war in Ukraine, is China,” Two weeks after the invasion, Oleg Ustenko, Ukraine’s president economic advisor, was noted in March 2022.
Russia’s dependence on Beijing is increasing due to its pariah status, and submission to sanctions.

Beijing’s new Proposal for peace This shows how Russia is supported by the CCP. It doesn’t call for the withdrawal Russian troops but denounces allegiance “blocs” NATO and the use “unilateral” sanctions. Moscow rejected the pro-Russian proposal quickly, claiming it didn’t recognize “new territorial realities.”
China’s plan was responded to by President Joe Biden who said that Beijing’s involvement was acceptable “not rational” The plan would only benefit Russia, he said. He stated that the CCP would support Moscow’s brutality through weapons shipments and U.S. corporations might leave China.
