Mark Duplass reveals battle with anxiety in Hollywood
Mark Duplass: Stripping Away the Veneer of Celebrity Life
Mark Duplass may not be a household name, but his face is certainly familiar. The actor/producer has graced our screens in numerous high-profile projects, from “The Morning Show” to “The Mindy Project” and “The League.”
At first glance, it seems like Duplass has it all – a thriving Hollywood career without the drawbacks of A-list fame, the admiration of his peers, and the freedom to tell stories on his own terms through his production company.
But there’s more to Duplass than meets the eye.
He has been using Instagram to share his mental health journey, shattering the illusion of his seemingly perfect life. While most celebrities use the platform for self-promotion, Duplass has a different agenda.
Today I am feeling a little sad. Can I say that and be okay with it? And not spend the day in fear that this small sadness will grow into a sadness monster that might take me down? Maybe I can even be grateful for the ability to hold this sadness (not run from it) and place it next to some hope I’ve been nurturing. And just let them co-mingle for a bit, like nervous strangers at a dinner party. And just kinda see what happens. Because, as many of you know, sadness is not the same thing as depression. Sadness is a feeling I’m grateful to feel. Sadness we can work with.
So yeah. I’m a little sad. And a little hopeful. That’s… pretty good.
How are you feeling today?
It’s a refreshing departure from his previous role as a “dude bro” on “The League,” a show that celebrated male bonding without delving into deeper emotions.
Here’s another example of Duplass’s candidness:

The Power of Small Moments
In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant stream of things to do, see, experience, and consume. But has it really made us happier? I don’t think so.
When I reflect on the most wonderful moments in my life, they were surprisingly small. The quiet solitude of a winter hike or the simple pleasure of savoring a homemade peanut butter and jelly sandwich at the top of a mountain. These seemingly insignificant experiences are the ones that truly lift me up.
I hope they can do the same for you.

Mark Duplass, known for his updates on Instagram, shares not only positive and life-affirming moments but also the singer-songwriters who have helped him through tough times. Artists like Cassandra Jenkins, The Milk Carton Kids, Adrianne Lenker, and The Paper Kites may not be household names, but Duplass’ followers are sure to discover their music soon.
But it’s not just a one-way conversation. Duplass’ deeply personal essays inspire feedback from fans and mental health professionals alike. He goes beyond the typical celebrity circuit, connecting with his followers in a meaningful way.
In fact, he even engages with mental health professionals from the nonprofit group To Write Love on Her Arms to discuss his feelings and how they can collectively help others. Through social media events, he raises money for “mental health scholarships” and has pledged to donate up to $10,000 towards the cause.
Duplass is not alone in his struggles. Many Hollywood stars have openly shared their personal battles. Robert Downey, Jr. overcame severe addiction issues before becoming Iron Man. Michael J. Fox turned his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis into a foundation that fights against the incurable illness. Even Angelina Jolie, despite her fame and success, admits to loathing the public eye and yearning for a more authentic life.
When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much…
Back in the day, there wasn’t this pressure to constantly put yourself out there, to reveal every detail of your life. But then something changed. After my divorce, I felt like I lost my freedom to live and explore without restrictions. I long for the day when I can move freely again. Growing up in Hollywood, I realized it’s not the healthiest environment. That’s why I strive for authenticity.
Celebrities routinely virtue signal on social media and via fawning interviews…
It’s become a common sight to see celebrities using social media and interviews to show off their supposed moral superiority. But let’s be honest, most of it is just empty talk. Their opinions rarely have any real impact. Often, they’re just trying to impress the right people and secure their next job with their carefully crafted image.
What Duplass, Downey Jr., and Fox have done is different…
However, there are a few stars who go beyond the superficial. People like Duplass, Downey Jr., and Fox are using their fame and influence to make a genuine difference in the lives of others. They’re not just talking the talk; they’re walking the walk.
That’s what true star power looks like.
