The Tragic Death Of Women’s Sports

Saving women’s sports should not require so much effort.

Riley Gaines was an All American and Olympic swimmer for the University of Kentucky. She had aspirations to attend dental school. Instead, she’s engaged in a national fight to keep men from competing against women in collegiate athletics.

Riley sat down at “Crain & Company” This week, she revealed some shocking details about her swimming match with Lia Thomas. It was Lia, born William Thomas, who was ranked 462nd in men’s swimming before deciding to identify as a female, and subsequently compete on the University of Pennsylvania women’s team. This culminated with Thomas standing on the top podium and being crowned women’s national champion by the NCAA.

To make matters worse, during that championship event, Gaines said that she and the other female competitors were involuntarily subjected to Thomas, a fully grown male, undressing in the women’s locker room. This reportedly occurred despite several of Thomas’s teammates already having made Ivy League officials aware of their reluctance to share a locker room with males. What was the league’s response to those concerns? Gaines was told that ‘If you are uncomfortable seeing male genitalia, make use of our counseling resources.’

Is it possible that one man’s feelings outweigh the feelings of many female athletes? I am the father of a baby girl and I believe I can speak for all men when I say that men don’t belong in the same room as our daughters or sisters.

Gaines won the 200m freestyle, beating all odds. Yet, during the award ceremony, the trophy was presented to the 6’1” Thomas. Gaines was a courageous competitor and questioned the NCAA official immediately about why her opponent was given the prize despite it ending in a draw. Gaines asserts that she was told. ‘For photo purposes, Lia needs to hold the trophy, but we’ll mail yours.’”

Unquestionably, this questionable PR stunt was not made unilaterally by an unqualified representative. Rather, it serves to provide evidence of a systemic ideology embedded in the philosophical fabric and long-standing institutions. This philosophy is based on the new-age principle that there are no biological or physical differences between the sexes. Some people fear that biological differences between men and women will lead to one sex being superior. This seems to be the case in certain parts of the population. This is false.

Professional boxing uses weight to classify fighters. Even the most skilled welterweight fighters will be at severe disadvantage against mediocre heavyweights. This does not mean that a lesser skilled fighter is at disadvantage. It simply indicates a physical inequality that renders the contest unfair. These physical differences can even be found within the same sex. They are most apparent at the highest levels in competition.

The final piece of information Riley Gaines shared dealt with disturbing aspects of Lia Thomas’s private life. I won’t go into too much detail, but I do mention it because I am concerned about the NCAA’s lack of diligence in naming Lia Thomas its transgender hero.

It was the NCAA that it stood for. ‘Never Cares About Athletes,’ The nomination of Lia Thomas for Woman of the year was made by the collegiate athletics committee. How broken is our culture that the highest authority body in collegiate sports affirms the idea that women can be successful, and that a woman can also be the best athlete?

Our university system is not only attempting to hold two opposing ideals, but it is also acting hypocritically. First, women’s sports matter and must be protected. Men can claim scholarships and championship trophies for women.

As the father and husband of two daughters, as well as the son and daughter of a mother I cannot continue to observe the decline of female athletics.

Recently, Senator Tommy Tuberville summarized this situation very well on our program when he stated that: “90% of the population is being held hostage by the other 10%.” He is correct and it is time to stand up for our rights. Women’s sports are reserved for women.
