“The View” hosts tossed author John Grisham a lifeline after he made a comment that sounded like he was fantasizing about assassinating Supreme Court Justices.

Grisham, who was a lawyer before he became an author, joined the ABC midday talk show on Wednesday to discuss his latest book “Camino Ghosts” — the audio version of which is read by “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg.

Behar set the tone by asking Grisham what he thought about the “scandals plaguing the Supreme Court” — apparently referencing recent partisan attacks against conservative justices as though they rose to that level — and suggesting that he “write a book or make a movie out of that.”

“I wrote a great book called ‘The Pelican Brief’ in which two Supreme Court Justices were assassinated, and I thought about doing it again,” Grisham said.

“No, no, no,” Behar’s response was immediate. “He means he’d write the book.”

“Writing part two! He’s talking about writing part two!” Goldberg interjected.

“It’s all fiction,” Sunny Hostin added.

In his own defense, Grisham repeated, “It’s all fiction. Don’t get upset.”

“It’s just fiction, it’s made up stories,” Behar said.

Grisham then addressed the question on a more serious note, saying that he believed the court had lost its credibility.

“The Court has never looked this bad in my lifetime,” he claimed, referencing the 2000 election case as the pivot point for a court that he no longer trusted. “Some of the rulings, the ethical challenges … It went downhill in 2000 when five Republicans on the court chose to elect a president.”
