The View says Musk is new president after spending bill died
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was jokingly named the next U.S. president by the hosts of The View on Thursday.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) released his continuing resolution to fund the government two days ago to a mixed reaction from his own party, leaving a government shutdown looming. Musk led the opposition to the spending bill, which was a hot topic on The View.
“I’ve been saying it. I think Elon Musk believes he’s president. I do,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said. “I called him vice president. I called him president. Because I don’t know what J.D. [Vance] is doing. I hardly ever — I don’t remember the last time we even talked about J.D.”
Musk was born in South Africa, so he could not become president according to the rule in Article II of the Constitution. However, he has since become a U.S. citizen, and some have floated the possibility of him being the next House speaker, as the position can be filled by someone who does not hold congressional office.
Within the legislation, there was a proposal to raise the debt ceiling in June. Musk railed against this aspect in particular, and Trump joined in as he will be in office when that would take place.
“So Trump is actually aligned with Elon on this. Here’s what I’m fascinated by: they both have main character energy. They both want to be powerful and the people in charge,” said co-host Alyssa Farrah Griffin. “I’m not convinced that this alliance is going to be super long-lasting.”
The continuing resolution is set to fund the government through March. While the House was set to vote on it Wednesday night, that vote was ultimately canceled. Another vote is slated for late Thursday.
The government shutdown deadline is midnight Saturday, Dec. 21.
