The Weekend Sports Update

Did you spend your weekend mowing the lawn and catching up with friends? That sounds lovely, but you missed all the sports. No one wants to be the person at work who has to bow out of sports conversations because you spent your entire Saturday pruning the azaleas.

Luckily, The Daily Wire has you covered. Every Monday morning, we’ll be providing you with all the highlights from the weekend of sports.

Here’s what you missed over the weekend.

2021 NFL Drafts Rounds 2-7:

After a wild first round on Thursday evening, the 2021 NFL draft concluded Saturday with rapid fire picks. The big winner of the draft? The South Eastern Conference, more specifically, the University of Alabama, which saw six players selected in the first round, tying a record set by the University of Miama (FL) in 2004.

For the 15th consecutive year, the SEC led all college football conferences with 65 picks, setting a new all-time record for most draft picks from a single conference. The previous record was set in 2019 — also by the SEC — when 64 players were chosen.

Alabama and Ohio State University led the way with 10 players drafted, with Georgia and Florida a close second with nine and eight players selected. The conference with the second most players picked, the Big Ten, had 44 players selected.

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask was selected by the Tampa Buccaneers to be Tom Brady’s possible replacement, if and when Brady actually gives in to Father Time. Quarterbacks Kellen Mond and David Mills were selected with the 66th and 67th picks, respectfully. There are many scouts who are high on Mond, and with the mediocre play of Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, it could make for some interesting storylines in Minnesota.

The Kentucky Derby:

The 147th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday was a wild one.

Medina Spirit, trained by the legendary Bob Baffert, won the race by just half a length over Mandaloun, making it the closest Kentucky Derby finish since Giacomo beat Closing Argument by a half-length in 2005.

The victory gave Baffert a record seven Derby wins, breaking a tie with Ben Jones for the most victories for a trainer.

The second leg of the Triple Crown, The Preakness, takes place on May 15th.

Aaron Rodgers Really Wants Out Of Green Bay:

The Rodgers saga in Green Bay keeps getting spicier.

Rodgers reportedly is adamant that he won’t return to Green Bay if current general manager Brian Gutekunst is still in charge. According to Yahoo! Sports Charles Robinson, Rodgers is willing to sit out offseason activities or hold out of training camp in order to get out of Green Bay. Robinson also reports that Rodgers may consider retirement to force the Packers hand.

Gutekunst is responsible for drafting quarterback Jordan Love in the 2020 draft without notifying Rodgers.

Milwaukee Bucks Beat The Brooklyn Nets In A Sunday Thriller:

It’s about time we got some good basketball. It’s been a difficult season for the NBA. With a limited number of fans attending games, and the play on the court often appearing sub-par, the NBA has been difficult to watch at times.

Luckily, the Nets and Bucks reminded us of how good it can be when star players actually square off.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the defending two-time MVP, dropped 49 points to lift the Bucks to a 117-114 victory over the Nets Sunday afternoon. Kevin Durant had 42 points to lead the Nets in a potential Eastern Conference finals preview.

Kyrie Irving also played for the Nets, with the Bucks being nearly at full-strength. The NBA playoffs are due to start Saturday, May 22.
