The White Stripes, the famous rock band, have sued former President Donald Trump for using their song “Seven Nation Army” in a campaign video without permission. The lawsuit was filed by band members Jack and Meg White in Manhattan, claiming that the use of their music constituted a ”flagrant misappropriation” of their copyright. The video in question featured Trump appearing at campaign events and was posted on August 30. Following its release, Jack White expressed his frustration on social media, warning of impending legal action against Trump’s team for unauthorized use of their music. This legal dispute is not new; the band had previously criticized Trump’s use of their song during his 2016 campaign. As of September 2, the video was reportedly removed from social media platforms associated with Trump and his communications director.

Former President Donald Trump was sued by the White Stripes for using their song “Seven Nation Army” in a campaign video on social media with the band claiming a breach of copyright law.
Jack and Meg White filed the lawsuit in Manhattan on Monday, alleging it was a “flagrant misappropriation” of their song.
The video, posted on Aug. 30, features Trump boarding an aircraft for campaign stops in Michigan and Wisconsin over the riff of “Seven Nation Army.”
On Aug. 29, Jack White took to Instagram to call out Trump’s Deputy Director of Communications, Margo Martin, sharing Martin’s X post of the campaign video and captioning it, “Oh… Don’t even think about using my music you fascists. Lawsuit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others).”
Jack White also posted a photo of the lawsuit on his Instagram account Monday with the caption, “This machine sues fascists.”
The video was not available on Martin’s or Trump’s social media pages as of Sept. 2, according to the Associated Press.
This is not the first time the White Stripes have interacted with Trump over his use of their music. In 2016, Trump used “Seven Nation Army” in another campaign video, sparking outrage from the duo who said they were “disgusted” by Trump’s use of their song, according to USA Today. The band took no legal action at that time.
The White Stripes said in the lawsuit they “vehemently oppose the policies adopted and actions taken by Defendant Trump when he was President and those he has proposed for the second term he seeks.”
The duo is the most recent of over 41 artists who have requested that Trump stop using their music, but few have pursued legal action over copyright infringement. Beyonce, Isaac Hayes Jr., and now the White Stripes have all turned to lawyers in response to Trump using their music.
Hayes’s estate was the most recent to file a lawsuit, with a federal judge in Atlanta ordering Trump to cease using Hayes’s songs at future campaign rallies.
