There Is No Upside To Trump’s Persecution
Attempting to portray the criminal indictment of Donald Trump as an unexpected win for the former president, Republicans need to face reality. This is not a win for Trump or his supporters who perceive it as a moment to rally against Democratic corruption.
But Republican support for Trump has risen since the indictment!
While a poll suggests that it may be more probable for Trump to be the party’s nominee, it means nothing. Are swing voters more likely to support a major candidate defending himself in a criminal proceeding? Will white women prefer Joe Biden or the candidate with recent fingerprints and mugshot processing?
It’s not fair. Duh. But it has never been about fairness. It’s more about who calls the shots. Democrats and the bureaucracy have shown that they are in charge time and again.
This won’t “backfire.” If Trump is found guilty, Democrats will prove that they can discard every one of their supposed sacred “norms” and swerve on every precedent to get what they want. If Trump is acquitted, Democrats will have lost nothing, and they will try again.
Anyone who thinks that Trump’s supporters will be motivated because of this hasn’t paid attention to the last two elections. Enthusiasm in American politics is a thing of the past post-2020. Before, it was important whether a candidate could excite enough people to take time out of their lives, go to the nearest polling location, wait in line, and cast their votes. (Weather permitting, of course!) Democrats don’t need that anymore. They now go ahead of Election Day and pester every slightly blue household on file, get the otherwise apathetic resident to vote Democrat and then tally it with the rest.
Trump has a lot of dedicated supporters who will do anything to get him back in the White House. However, this is insufficient to counteract the opposition’s harvesting of mail-in ballots. Not to mention the legal power that Democrats are willing to use against those who oppose them.
Feeling dejected? That’s the idea. And they’re sure that it’s only a matter of time if not.
The 2024 election is still more than a year away. It’s not over yet, but should Republicans pretend this significant loss is an undercover win, they will not have a chance.
