The survey, conducted by All Star Home, analyzed cities‌ and ‍towns ⁣in the ⁢50 smallest TV-designated market areas with populations of less than 100,000.

Emily Thornton, spokesperson for the company, explained that the survey took ⁤into account various factors such⁤ as safety, affordability, historical buildings, farmers ⁢markets, and even high school ⁣football winning percentages. “We wanted to capture the essence⁣ of what‌ people ‍value in small communities, and Friday night ⁣high school football ‌games ⁢are a⁢ big part of that,” she said.

Among ⁢the other top U.S. hometowns are Hattiesburg and Greenwood,⁢ Mississippi; Bowling Green, Kentucky; Hannibal, Missouri; and Charlottesville, Virginia.

According to Thornton, it’s no surprise that‍ New York has a strong presence on the list. “When people think of New⁣ York, they often‍ only think of the ​city. But this ranking serves as a reminder that there are many incredible communities throughout the state,” she ‌said.

Pamela Pariso, ​a local real estate agent, shared her insights on Elmira’s top ranking. “Elmira is a well-kept secret. It’s nestled at the base of the Finger Lakes, boasts stable weather, and offers a great community with ⁣affordable home prices,” she revealed.

Elmira is a⁤ haven for homebuyers, with three-bedroom, two-bath single-family homes available for around $160,000. Bidding wars are rare,⁣ making‌ it an attractive option for those coming‌ from downstate New ​York. ⁤The city ‍is⁤ adorned with Victorian, Colonial, and Federal-style⁤ homes, many of​ which have been beautifully restored.

Elmira ​College‍ and the Lake Erie College of ⁢Osteopathic Medicine are also drawing young people to the area.⁣ “Parents are even buying properties for their children‍ attending ⁤these colleges to help them build equity,” Pariso added.⁤ The ‍downtown area is experiencing a ‍revival, with new coffee shops and stores popping up.

Elmira‌ is not only safe but also offers easy‍ access to nearby attractions such as Watkins Glen, Ithaca, Corning, and the Finger Lakes region.⁢ The city is witnessing a return ⁢of seniors, affectionately known as “boomerangers,” ‌who move back to be ​closer to family and grandchildren.

Marquette,⁣ Michigan, takes the crown ⁣for safety, followed by Weston, West Virginia, and Montrose, Colorado. The rankings were determined using data from FBI crime reports and local police departments, analyzing crime ‌averages from 2011 ‌to 2021. Alpena, Michigan, and Oak Hill, ⁣West Virginia, complete the top five safest communities.

For affordable living,‍ Greenville, Mississippi, claims the top spot with an average home value of ⁢just $69,470. Keokuk,‌ Iowa, and‌ Greenwood, Mississippi, follow closely behind. Bluefield, West Virginia, and Sweetwater, Texas, round up the top‍ five with affordable home‍ values.

Charlottesville,⁣ Virginia,⁤ stands out for its overall community score and historical buildings, with 99 registered historic spots. Notably, two U.S. presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, once​ called Charlottesville home.

Denise Ramey, a local​ realtor, expressed her pride⁢ in Charlottesville’s recognition. “This area‍ has consistently been recognized as one of the best places to live and retire. We have a great ‌climate, numerous events and venues,⁣ excellent medical care, and breathtaking views of ⁢the Blue Ridge Mountains,” she shared.

The University of Virginia is a major ​draw, attracting ⁤alumni and parents of students. Charlottesville’s proximity⁢ to Richmond and Washington, D.C., adds to its appeal.
