‘They Think They Own Our Kids’: Michigan Moms Speak Out After Democrat Party Trashes Parental Rights
Several moms from Michigan have spoken out against the Democratic Party in their state publishing – and then deleting – a Facebook post that bashed parents for wanting a say in what their children were taught in school.
The mothers went on “Fox & Friends” to express their outrage at the condescending post from the state’s Democratic Party.
“I think that the Michigan Democratic Party, teachers unions, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer, they think they own our kids,” said Tori Sachs, a mom of four, according to Fox News.
Sachs called the message from the Democratic Party “especially disturbing,” since they kept advocating for schools to remain closed during the pandemic despite scientific evidence suggesting it was unnecessary, as well as Whitmer’s vetoing of scholarships that would have allowed parents to pay for at-home tutoring or for their kids to attend a different school.
Sachs said the Democratic Party in her state, along with Whitmer, are “out of touch” with the American people. She also said Whitmer has been “controlled” by teachers unions “her entire time in office.”
As The Daily Wire previously reported, the Michigan Democratic Party published a snarky note to its Facebook page saying, “Not sure where this ‘parents-should-control-what-is-taught-in-schools-because-they-are-our-kids’ is originating, but parents do have the option to send their kids to a hand-selected private school at their own expense if this is what they desire.”
The post then lectured parents who assert their right to have a say in their child’s education, saying those parents must learn that the “purpose of a public education in a public school is not to teach only what parents want them to be taught. It is to teach them what society needs them to know. ”
“The client of the public schools is not the parent, but the entire community, the public,” the Facebook post added.
The original post was published Sunday but soon deleted. On Monday, the account shared a new post that said: “We have deleted a post that ignored the important role parents play—and should play—in Michigan public schools. Parents need to have a say in their children’s education, end of story.”
“The post does not reflect the views of Michigan and should not be misinterpreted as a statement of support from our elected officials or candidates,” the post added.
The original statement from the Michigan Democratic Party echoes sentiments from Democrats across the country, who have increasingly lashed out at parents expressing outrage over COVID-19 policies and their children being taught Critical Race Theory. Such a sentiment all but doomed former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s campaign for a second, nonconsecutive term, when he said during the final gubernatorial debate in September that parents shouldn’t have a say in their child’s education.
At one point during the debate, the candidates were asked out whether protections for transgender students should be determined at the state or local level. McAuliffe responded to an incident where a parent complained that two books available to high school students contained graphic sexual content and pedophilia. The school district removed the books but later reinstated them.
“I’m not gonna let parents come in to schools and actually take books off and make their own decisions,” McAuliffe said to audience applause (the debate took place in ultra-Liberal Northern Virginia). “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”
“I get really tired of everybody running down teachers. I love our teachers and what they’ve done through covid, these are real heroes who deserve our respect,” he added.
