New contender joins race for Delaware House seat.
A New Contender Enters the Race for Delaware’s House Seat
A third Democratic candidate has thrown their hat into the ring for Delaware’s sole House seat, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive primary election. Eugene Young, a rising star in Delaware politics, officially launched his bid on Monday, joining two other candidates who have already announced their campaigns: state Sen. Sarah McBride and state Treasurer Colleen Davis.
“We need to build a bridge to bring people and resources together. Neighbors who aren’t afraid to stand up and fight for each other,” Young wrote in a statement. “And that’s why I’m running.”
Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) had previously announced that she would not seek reelection in the House, instead aiming to replace Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), who is retiring after holding the seat since 2001. Rochester’s decision opens up Delaware’s at-large House seat for the first time since her historic election in 2016 as the first woman and first black House member to represent the state.
Young had hinted earlier this summer about his interest in running for Congress. If elected, he would make history as the first black man to represent Delaware in Congress.
Young’s impressive track record in Delaware politics has solidified his status as a rising star in the state. Earlier this year, he was nominated by Gov. John Carney to serve as the director of the state Housing Authority. In this role, Young has successfully increased the state’s investment in affordable housing from $10 million to an impressive $122 million.
“I am making good on my promise to keep fighting for us,” Young declared. “Our fight starts here with each and every one of you.”
