Three NFL players face indefinite suspensions due to a gambling scandal in 2022.
The NFL Takes Action Against Players for Gambling
The NFL has taken a strong stance against gambling, suspending three players indefinitely for their involvement in betting on games during the 2022 season. Indianapolis Colts players Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry, along with free agent Demetrius Taylor, will face suspension until the end of the 2023 season. In addition, Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans will be suspended for six games for betting on non-NFL sports within the club facility.
Petit-Frere’s Eligibility and Reinstatement
While Petit-Frere will still be able to participate in offseason and preseason activities and games, Rodgers, Berry, and Taylor will have to “petition for reinstatement at the conclusion of the 2023 season,” according to the NFL’s statement.
“The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility,” the statement read.
Rodgers expressed remorse for his actions in an Instagram post, acknowledging his mistakes and vowing to make amends. “I’ve let people down that I care about,” he wrote. “I made an error in judgment and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes are rectified throughout the process. It’s an honor to play in the NFL, and I am very sorry for all of this.”
Petit-Frere defended his actions, stating that the betting he engaged in was not NFL-related and was legal under Tennessee law. He believes the sanction is only due to the location where it occurred, the Titans facility.
In April, the NFL had already suspended three other players indefinitely and handed out six-game suspensions to two more for violating its gambling rules.
