Three people were shot and one was stabbed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in what appears to be a family dispute on Christmas Day.
Officers responded to the situation outside a security checkpoint in Terminal 4 around 9:45 p.m. local time, where they found a woman and two men suffering from gunshot wounds. All three injured by gunfire were taken to the hospital.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Mayra Reeson told reporters the situation “was a family dispute that escalated.”
“Preliminary information suggests a group of known individuals engaged in a physical altercation that escalated to one subject retrieving a handgun from their person,” a Phoenix Police media advisory said.
Police in Phoenix said two people, a man and a juvenile female, involved with the matter were detained. The man was taken to a hospital with at least one stab wound and is in stable condition.
The woman who was shot is in critical condition, while two men with gunshot wounds are in stable condition.
Reeson said police had yet to interview those detained early Thursday, and no charges had been filed, but weapons have been recovered. She noted that the police did not believe there were “any suspects out there.”
Police said it is unclear if these people were traveling together or if they were at the airport for another reason.
“This is scary,” Reeson said. “It was Christmas evening. Everybody is trying to get home.”

The security checkpoint was temporarily closed, and Sky Train operations were paused as a precaution, but the order was lifted around an hour later.
As of Thursday morning, the entrance to B and C gates in Terminal 4 were blocked off.
