Three suspects arrested in robbery of Secret Service agent during Biden visit: Police
Authorities arrested three suspects in the robbery of a Secret Service agent during President Joe Biden’s visit to Southern California last month.
On June 15, the agent was held up at gunpoint in Tustin, a city in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles. They were in the Golden State for a reelection fundraiser for Biden. According to a source speaking with CBS, the agent was not part of the president’s protective detail but served in a support capacity.
Tustin police on Thursday said they arrested three men in connection to the robbery. The victim had just parked his car and was walking home when the incident happened.
“He was approached by a van and a suspect got out of the van, approached him with a firearm, put it into his face, and asked for his bag,” Tustin Police Sgt. Ryan Newton said, per KABC.
Suspsect Jamonte Johnson stole the agent’s bag, while two other suspects, Bertran Bell and E’Shon Dodson, helped carry out the robbery, according to authorities.
The agent was off duty at the time of the incident and shot Bell as he defended himself with a firearm.
“Another one of the suspects attempted to exit the van, exhibited some threatening manners and that’s when the shooting occurred,” Newton explained. “The victim in this case defended himself with his firearm and he fired into that van.”
All three suspects have been charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
Newton said all of the suspects “have several felony arrests and convictions all out of the Los Angeles area.”
