Thune argues GOP Senate campaigns are seeing ‘momentum’ despite being outspent – Washington Examiner
In a recent statement, Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) claimed that the Republican Party is gaining “momentum” in anticipation of the upcoming elections, particularly in competitive Senate races. His comments came amid concerns raised by Representative Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s electability in Michigan. Thune argued that the Democratic Party is worried due to the negative impact of the Biden administration’s policies on critical voter issues such as the economy and immigration. He expressed optimism about the prospects for Republicans in both Senate and presidential races in Rust Belt states. Despite acknowledging that the GOP is being outspent by Democrats in these battlegrounds, Thune suggested that many contests are still tightly contested.
Thune argues GOP Senate campaigns are seeing ‘momentum’ despite being outspent
Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) said the Republican Party is experiencing “momentum” in the last few weeks before the election, especially in swing state Senate races.
Thune’s comment was in response to concerns Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) has shared regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s electability in her state. The South Dakota lawmaker suggested his opposing party is “worried” and cited how states such as Michigan have been drastically affected by the Biden administration’s policies. He said the Democratic Party is “all wrong” on matters voters care about, such as the economy and immigration.
“And we’re starting to see really positive movement and momentum in those Senate races, and I think at the presidential level, you’ll see those too in those rust belt states,” Thune said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom.
Thune was then asked about his party being outspent by Democrats in battleground states, with recent polling data putting Democrats ahead in these states. The South Dakota senator contended that most of the races are within the margin of error and that these polls underestimate how much help voters will bring to Republican Senate candidates when they vote for former President Donald Trump.
“It bodes well, and I think we’re set up well to get the majority but win seats that would give us a bigger majority. We have to execute,” said Thune.
Thune concluded that winning the Senate and the White House while keeping the House is imperative for the Republican Party. However, he contended that Republicans must at least win the Senate to ensure a “check in balance.”
Both parties only have just over five weeks left to campaign to voters before Election Day on Nov. 5. Gallup has found that Republicans lead in nine of the 10 matters it charts to determine which party is up or down and that the 2024 election cycle “is Trump’s and Republicans’ to lose.”
