Democrats fear that the New York migrant crisis could spell disaster for their party.
The Migrant Crisis in New York: A Disaster for Democrats
Democrats are deeply concerned about the escalating migrant crisis in New York and its potential implications for the Democratic Party. According to Howard Wolfson, former deputy mayor and political adviser for Michael Bloomberg, this issue alone has the power to cost Democrats the House. The crisis is particularly significant in swing districts in the suburbs, where voters are closely following the coverage of the situation.
The conflict over how to handle the influx of tens of thousands of migrants from the southern border has put Democratic leaders, Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City mayor Eric Adams, under intense scrutiny.
Charlie King, former Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, warns that the situation is a ticking time bomb for the party. He questions how long they can evade the issue and whether it will improve in the near future.
The pressure on Governor Hochul to find solutions has intensified. Mayor Adams and a coalition of immigration and community groups have called for a statewide relocation program to distribute the burden of housing migrants across upstate counties. They have also pushed for executive orders to prevent municipalities from blocking migrants, following a lawsuit by Republicans in the city’s northern suburbs.
But with migrants continuing to arrive, Mr. Adams recently escalated his calls for the state to get even more involved. The mayor, as well as a coalition of immigration and community groups, has called for Ms. Hochul to implement a statewide relocation program so that upstate counties share the burden of housing migrants.
And Mr. Adams and advocates have pressed for executive orders to prevent reluctant municipalities from barring migrants after Republicans in the city’s northern suburbs sued when the mayor tried to bus migrants there in May.
The growing pressure has forced the governor to balance upstate and downstate constituencies with opposing degrees of willingness to accept migrants in their communities.
Amid the crisis, Democrats have started pointing fingers at each other. Governor Hochul has criticized Mayor Adams for alleged inaction on the part of the city government. Hochul’s lawyers have accused the city of failing to accept the state’s offers for help and failing to coordinate with surrounding communities to provide housing, resulting in a severe shortage of housing for illegal immigrants.
In response, Mayor Adams has defended himself, stating that some of the governor’s suggestions are not feasible, such as housing migrants in flood-prone areas. He emphasizes the importance of avoiding emergency situations where people would need to be relocated from such locations.
Mayor Adams has also placed blame on the White House, rallying alongside other Democratic New York City politicians to demand more assistance from the federal government.
This week, Adams criticized the Biden administration for the delay in expediting work permits for migrants, calling it “unacceptable.”
