TikTok CEO posts video asking users for help staving off ban from Congress
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew released a video on Tuesday asking users to help save the app from a national ban by Congress. With his scheduled appearance before Congress on Thursday, Chew revealed that the app has 150 million monthly active users and 7,000 employees in the United States. He spoke about the importance of TikTok to Americans and asked users to post in the comments what they want their representatives to know about why they love using the app.
Congress has been focused on TikTok over claims that parent company ByteDance shares US data with the Chinese Communist Party, based on Chinese national security laws. However, ByteDance denies the allegations, and its CEO hopes to convince lawmakers that banning the app would not be in the interest of the millions of people who use it.
TikTok’s previous report stated that it had 100 million monthly active users in 2021, which means its market presence in the US has grown quickly. Members of Congress have proposed several measures to restrict TikTok in America, including a bill by Marco Rubio to ban the app altogether and a bill by Mark Warner to provide extra powers to the Commerce Department to analyze and determine if select business deals are security risks.
