Tim Allen Opens up About Starring With Real-Life Daughter in “The Santa Clauses” Miniseries – “It Was an Amazing Experience”

In Disney+’s The Santa Clauses Tim Allen is set to star with his real-life daughter Elizabeth Allen-Dick, who is making her acting debut in the upcoming Christmas miniseries. The 69 year-old star is admitting that working with his real-life daughter on camera was an emotional experience for him at times.

‘My Daughter Is Playing My Daughter’

Elizabeth, 13, will be playing one of Santa’s children with Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) alongside Austin Kane, according to Daily Mail

“My daughter is playing my daughter in the movie,” Allen, who of course plays Santa, told Entertainment Weekly.

“The line kept coming back to me, ‘Has she ever done this before?’” he continued. “And I said, ‘No.’ But she’s read scripts with me all the time. We got to play all the time as a comedian. I’m that way around the house. She’s able to take a line, make it her own, add value to it and be honest about it. And it was an amazing experience.”

Elizabeth is the daughter of Allen and his current wife Jane Hajduk, and she goes by the name Allen-Dick because Dick actually happens to the actor’s real last name. While he’s always been known professionally as Tim Allen, he was actually born Timothy Alan Dick. The Home Improvement actor is also the father of another daughter named Katherine from a previous marriage.

How Elizabeth Got Cast

Allen had initially only wanted a small part for Elizabeth, but casting directors loved her audition so much that they ended up wanting her to play Santa’s daughter in the miniseries.

“It’s difficult to believe, but it had very little to do with me,” Allen said of her casting. “I wanted to put my youngest daughter as an elf, just so she’d see herself in a movie. But as she was reading for that, she read so well that they said, ”We’d like to read her for more of a part.’ I said, ‘Whatever you want to do. I want nothing to do with it.’”

“I don’t want to pitch my daughter for a part in the movie,” he explained. “But she ended up moving to the high ranks. They loved how she read, loved it so much, because she’s playing a 13-year-old girl and she is 13. They ended up casting her as Santa’s daughter. It was a surprise but it became the most amazing experience.”

Though Allen will be reprising his role as Santa Claus/Scott Calvin in The Santa Clauses, after having played the titular character in the three beloved movies in the eponymously named Christmas film series, getting back into the legendary red suit was still a magical experience for the actor.

“As I walked on set for the first time in the full regalia, everybody got very quiet, both adults and kids,” Allen said. “When I show up dressed in the full suit and everything else, there’s big smiles on people’s faces. Little kids are quiet. I had totally forgotten that. It does feel like Santa’s in the room.”

‘It Was Tear-Jerking To Watch’

Set to debut with the release of two episodes on Disney’s streaming platform on Wednesday the 16th of November, The Santa Clauses, will see Santa and his family moving from the North Pole to the city of Chicago.

“I don’t want to give too much away, but she doesn’t want to go,” Allen said. “So I tell her, ‘Being afraid is okay as long as we can be afraid together.’ Even saying the line, I get a little choked up. I looked right at her.”

“One of my photographer buddies was shooting and said it was tear-jerking to watch. I said, ‘Well, I’m looking at my kid,’” he continued. “And she literally showed what I learned from Pat Richardson on Home Improvement: Real actors can really emote real emotions. She did it to me there, and I reacted to it, and it was an amazing moment. I’ll never forget it.”

Allen and Patricia Richardson starred on the sitcom Home Improvement from 1991-1999, and the show is still beloved by fans to this day.
