Tim Scott to unveil strategy to dismantle cartels during upcoming border visit.
Sen. Tim Scott to Unveil Plan to “Crush the Cartels” at Southern Border
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) is set to make his first trip to the southern border as a 2024 Republican presidential candidate on Friday, where he will reveal his strategy to “crush the cartels.”
Scott’s campaign announced on Wednesday that the two-term senator will address the issue of transnational criminal organizations that profit billions of dollars each year by smuggling people and drugs into the United States.
“If you don’t control your back door at your house, it’s not your house. If you don’t control your southern border, it might not be our country,” Scott said in a statement. “That’s why on my first day as commander-in-chief, the strongest nation on Earth will stop retreating from our own southern border.”
During his visit, Scott will be heading to Yuma, a city in southwestern Arizona with a population of 90,000, located about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Phoenix.
As part of his itinerary, the candidate will be hosting a round table discussion with local leaders and law enforcement officials.
Yuma has been a hotspot for human smuggling in recent years and has experienced a high rate of illegal immigrant apprehensions.
The Biden administration has responded to pressure from Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and former Gov. Doug Ducey (R-AZ) by filling in gaps between border wall projects this year.
